Eliot P Kaplan, PhD, LCSW, CAS is the founder and director of 'The Paradox Psychology Institute'. He holds a PhD in Counseling Psychology from Temple University, PA (1993); an MSW from Rutgers University, NJ (1980); and is a Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS). He also has post graduate training in Gestalt Therapy.
Dr. K has 'cracked the code' as to the mechanism behind paradoxical interventions. In addition, he asserts that paradox psychology offers the 'missing link' that solves the mystery to a unified understanding of behavioral, cognitive, and psychodynamic approaches. His work allows us to clearly identify the 'active ingredient' that each of these methods have in common. By having a better understanding of this core dynamic, it becomes possible to focus treatment interventions in a manner that we can achieve higher rates of success when working with 'treatment-resistant' individuals.
Dr. K has experience in a variety of mental health settings including inpatient and outpatient psychiatric facilities, and adolescent residential facilities. His treatment range covers children, adolescents, adults, and families. He is proficient at treating patients / families diagnosed as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) as well as those exhibiting various addictive types of behavior. He has presented seminars nationally to healthcare professionals on working with the ‘frustrating client’ and ‘oppositional behavior’ in adolescents.
Dr. K's primary interest has been in understanding the factors that lead to successfully working with the 'treatment resistant client'. Over time he came to recognize the power and depth of paradoxical interventions. To determine if the method was truly worthwhile, he began working with a population that many clinicians consider to be "untreatable"; those exhibiting Problem Sexual Behavior (PSB). As PSB psychologist at a residential facility for adolescents, he treated youth in individual, group, and family settings. As a result of his success, he authored a chapter in The Sex Offender-Volume 6 Civic Research Press (CRI) on: Paradoxical Interventions For Treatment Resistant Offenders - Theory and Practice.
